I've been following this site's walkthrough of the game, since I heard that you could screw yourself out of a ton of content by trying to play the game blind. I'd recommend it if you don't mind grinding and are looking for a difficult game to play. Overall, while these mechanics work against each other to fight the player, it becomes a nice challenge, and for 1987, the game is definitely innovative. And, the Sega Genesis version increases XP rates and inclues secrets to quickly gain gold and XP. And, if you don't want to grind as much, the Priest and Monk classes have a 50% XP boost after the 4th level, the reason being is because how level ups work: you can either spend your XP on levels or spend it on learning new spells.

This all leads to a lot of grind, but it's not that bad to grind. Slimes are always bad, if a tree seems to be moving around the map then it's good, and if a tree seems to be standing in one place and opening and closing its mouth then it's bad.

Luckily, this is pretty easy to figure out in the begining. Killing good monsters will lower your mortality, which will make some NPCs not talk to you and (don't quote me on this but it seems like this is the case) will make shop items more expensive. On top that, the only way to save is to sleep at an inn (which you need to do anyways or else-you guessed it-you'll die.) And sleeping at an inn costs 1,000 gold, which is hard to get starting out! Along with dangerous monsters, you also have to weed out what monsters are "good" and which ones are "bad." Good monsters won't attack you first, but bad monsters will. Therefore, you won't be able to arm yourself with much armor, so any remotely tougher enemy can easily shred through you. Eventually you'll start to get so much gold when grinding that you'll be unable to move at all due to the weight! Inventory management is key, and you can only buy what is necessary. You will end up moving slower than usual, but luckily there is a way to pump up the game speed. You get weighed down so easily in this game-hell, even gold will weigh you down. It has a hunger system that will just straight up kill you if you don't eat twice a day, which wouldn't be an isssue if the weight system wasn't so cruel.

I don't talk about the story, but just to be safe I'll spoiler tag it: Overall, I think the game is a neat little thing to pick up and play! It's pretty grindy, some of the plot crucial secrets are pretty cryptic, and the combat can be a little janky at first, but once you get into it, it can be a fun but unforgiving experience.īelow here is a summary of the starting experience and some tips. I'll atleast link the music here, since it's one of the best parts of the game. I had already played the US Sega Genesis port of the game (renamed to Super Hydlide, probably because the second Hydlide never came out over here), and I wanted to give this version a try, since I believe this version explains the story better, has better graphics, and the music is just amazing.

I've been playing the Windows remaster of Hydlide 3: The Space Memories.
